3D objects may come in a variety of formats. Often, you will see the .obj extension. This format was created by Wavefront Technologies and uses a binary file format. You cannot edit these files with any text editor or word processor.

The .fbx file extension is usually found on 3D models that were created in Autodesk's Maya program or Maxon Cinema 4D. These files use a proprietary binary format that can be read by other programs but not edited with a text editor.

The .3ds extension is used by Nintendo's 3DS system, which utilizes stereoscopic imaging technology to display images on its handheld gaming system.

If you have a 3D model that you want to view on your computer, there is a good chance that it will be in the OBJ format. This is a common format for 3D models and can be used by many different programs.

If you are looking for an open source program that can view OBJ files, there are several options available. The most popular ones include Blender and MeshLab.

Blender is a free and open source 3D creation suite for movies and modding. It has built-in support for OBJ files as well as other file types such as FBX, DAE and STL. It also allows users to export their models in various formats including GEOM, PLY and COLLADA.

MeshLab is another free tool that supports the opening of OBJ files as well as other formats like VRML97/VRML2, DXF/DWG/DXB/STL, PLY/OBJ/C4D/COLLADA/OFF/WRL, STL(ASCII), OFF(ASCII), OSM (ASCII), CGM (ASCII), SVG(ASCII). It also offers users the ability to convert between formats such as converting between ASCII and Binary.

Photoshop can open an OBJ file, but it only displays the model. You can't edit the model in Photoshop.

The OBJ file format is a simple text-based format that's used to describe a polygonal 3D object. It's very common in video games and 3D printing.

OBJ files are supported by many 3D modeling programs and game engines, including Blender, Cinema 4D, LightWave 3D, Maya and SketchUp.

Here are some examples of how you might use OBJ files in your projects:

Turning real-world objects into 3D models for games or virtual reality experiences.

Making a game character from scratch by drawing its shape in 2D and converting it into polygons with an OBJ exporter plugin for your favorite drawing software (like Adobe Illustrator).
